Valentine's Day is the one occasion where everybody sends something, which makes it the hardest day to sound like yourself. The messages that land on 14 February are the ones that could not have been sent by anyone else, to anyone else.
Every card in the shop already says "special", "amazing", and "my everything". By the time your message arrives it is competing with a dozen of them. Cut those words out entirely and describe something instead — what they do, what you noticed, what you have not told them. Description beats declaration on a day when everyone is declaring.
There are two different Valentine messages and mixing them up is the usual mistake. Asking someone to be your Valentine is a question with real uncertainty, and it should be short, light, and easy to answer either way. Telling a long-term partner how you feel is not a question at all, and it can afford to be longer and more serious. Decide which one you are sending before you write a word.
A Valentine message that arrives at 11pm reads like an afterthought, however good it is. Morning is best — it sets the tone for their whole day and it beats the rush. If you are asking rather than telling, earlier also gives them room to answer without the pressure of a date already half over.
